Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Studies
Welcome Message from the Dean
There are many reasons to choose a programme of study at the Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Studies at the University of Mines and Technology. It is a unique Faculty with the aim to make a contribution towards making tomorrow's world a better place. We are a Faculty within a large research University. The degree programmes under the Faculty are consistently among the top ranked programs nationally.
Brief History
The Faculty of Mineral Resources Technology, was established in October 2001 when the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology School of Mines, Tarkwa was elevated to the status of a University College to train high-level personnel in Mining and allied engineering disciplines. However, on 1st August, 2021, the Faculty of Geosciences and Environmental Studies (FGES) became operational with three existing academic Departments (Geomatic Engineering, Geological Engineering and Environmental and Safety Engineering).
The Geomatic Engineering and Geological Engineering have been in existence since 1982 when the University Council of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) approved a recommendation to restructure the then Institute of Mining and Mineral Engineering into a Faculty of KNUST. The Environmental and Safety Engineering Department was however instituted in 2013.
All the three (3) academic departments offer certificate, four-year undergraduate (BSc) and postgraduate programmes. In addition, the Geological Engineering Department offer Diploma in General Drilling program and plans are far advanced to introduce diploma programmes in the other Departments to provide academic progression for certificate holders.
The Faculty currently has 2041 students undertaking various programmes and they are made up of 125 postgraduate students, 1856 undergraduate students, 29 diploma students and 31 certificates students.
Vision and Mission statements
The vision and mission of the Faculty is to be the Centre of Excellence, dedicated to teaching, research and innovation and Entrepreneurship. This will be achieved in partnership with local and international organisations.
