The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa has launched a new Department of Management Studies in the Faculty of Integrated Management Science at a clolourful ceremony at the University. The new Department was established to give meaning to the UMaT Act, (2004), Act 677 which mandates the University to establish a Faculty of Integrated Management Science to give the needed tools and skills to managers of mining and allied companies in the country. As a start, the Department will run two programmes in Master of Business and Technology Management and MSc Engineering Management.
In his address to launch the Department, the Vice Chancellor, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma reiterated the resolve of the University not to deviate from its core mandate of providing quality engineering and management education to its students. He assured prospective students to the Department of the best quality in the programmes that will be run by the Department since according to him UMaT is the best publicly funded University in the country. He indicated that the introduction of the two masters programmes will help many people who want to study for a masters programme to come to UMaT instead of having to travel to either Kumasi, Cape Coast or Accra to access similar programmes.
Prof Kuma called on prospective applicants to consider enrolling in the programmes in the Department of Management Studies because, according to him, they are assured of the best quality education. He indicated that the programmes would be run during the weekends and as a result they will be suitable for workers within Tarkwa and its environs. He further announced that a Master of Science in Mine Administration would also be introduced soon to strengthen the managerial capacity of managers in the mining companies.
The Dean of the Faculty of Integrated Management Science (FIMS), Prof Newton Amegbey was hopeful that although there were many management programmes being run by various Universities in the country, those from UMaT would be run with a difference adding that UMaT as an Engineering and Technology Institution already had the track record for the training of the best quality students. He indicated that the Masters programmes were opened to all disciplines applicants with a good first degree in any discipline. Prof Amegbey said that just as UMaT has been involved in the training of people who manage the technical aspects of the mining companies, the Department of Management Studies was being established to train students who would be equipped to manage the business aspects of engineering.
The Head of Department of the Department of Management Studies, Dr Anthony Ewusi, called on stakeholders to come to the aid of the Department by supporting their workers to enroll in the masters programmes. He further indicated that the programmes would be organised during the weekends and therefore would save many workers from travelling long distances to access the similar programmes elsewhere.
The Department will also run a one year Certificate course in Small Scale Mining and Quarry Administration during the weekends to equip existing and prospective small scale miners with the necessary skills to manage their concessions efficiently and also practice responsible mining.

The Newmont Delegation Right in a Meeting wth UMaT Officials
A five member delegation from Newmont Ghana Gold Limited has paid a working visit to the University of Mines and Technology. The delegation was led by the Vice President for Sustainability and External Relations, Newmont Africa, Madam Adiki Ayitevie and the Regional Vice President, Human Resources, Awo Quaison-Sackey, Briefing the Vice Chancellor on the purpose of their visit, Madam Adiki explained that they were in UMaT to strike a strategic partnership with the University which they hope would be mutually beneficial.
According to the team, Newmont had a national level Corporate Social Responsibility programme and one of the pillars of the programme focuses on education which is termed Tertiary-Secondary Skills Enhancement Programme (T-SSEP). This programme according to the team has under it the Newmont Global University Strategy. This strategy aims at partnering 3 Universities in Ghana including UMaT as part of efforts to create sustainable economy and to continue to impact the lives of the people in the areas they operate. According to the Regional Talent Management Manger, Madam Georgina Bartels, a key element of the University programme was that selected Senior Leaders within the Company in the Africa Region would be Executive Sponsors to help establish Strategic and Valued partnership with the Universities concerned. These Universities she said should offer courses that are relevant to Newmont’s business needs. These courses include Mining Engineering, Metallurgy or Minerals Engineering, Geomatic Engineering and Earth Science or Geological Engineering.
Madam Georgina Bartels indicated that the Relationship they seek to establish will grow in 3 primary directions including the University graduate to be a key feeder into the professional jobs within Newmont, Student engagement - this will allow Newmont an opportunity to engage directly with the students of UMaT and academic partnerships to enable Newmont to work at the appropriate levels within the University to achieve mutual goals including Newmont Executive Sponsors liaising and engaging UMaT Faculty to ensure alignment to industry and Newmont’s needs. She was impressed about the fact that UMaT would be the hub for the training of mining engineers for Newmont.

Welcoming the delegation to UMaT, the Vice Chancellor, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma expressed his happiness for making it a point to come to UMaT to pay the visit with the aim of establishing this important partnership. He gave them a brief history of the University and indicated that UMaT was a specialised institution that trains engineers in the fields of Mining, Petroleum and other engineering programmes. According to Prof Kuma UMaT students are given real hands-on training in their studies and this, he emphasised, made them always stand out and ready for the job market. Prof Kuma promised the commitment of UMaT for the development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will soon be signed. He expressed his excitement for the fact that the MoU would include internships which he emphasised would help the students to strengthen their practical skills, provide the avenue for consultancy services and collaborative research for staff. He was happy that there was a desire by the delegation to have the MoU signed soon.
Present at the meeting were Assoc Prof V. A. Temeng, the Pro Vice Chancellor, Mr A. K. Doku, the Registrar of UMaT, Assoc Prof Samuel Ndur, the Vice Dean of FMRT and Mr Paul Yeboah, the University Relations Officer.

The Council of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa at its 62nd (Regular) Meeting held on 15th September, 2017 appointed His Excellency Former President John Agyekum Kufuor as Chancellor of the University. President Kufuor has thus become the first Chancellor to be appointed by this University. The appointment makes President Kufuor the Titular Head of the University and he will preside at the ceremonies of the University and confer on qualified persons all degrees, diplomas and certificates awarded by the University.
The University Council, acting on a recommendation of a Search Committee, appointed President Kufuor to a first term of five years and to be renewed for another term of five years. His appointment took effect from 1st November, 2017.
President Kufuor was born on 8th December, 1938 at Kumasi (Ghana). He was called to the Bar at Lincoln Inn, London (1959-1961) and obtained a BA Honours Degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Exeter College, University of Oxford (1961-1964). He also holds an MA in Economics from Oxford.
His Excellency John Agyekum Kufuor served two terms as president of the Republic of Ghana from 2001–2009.
During his presidency, he served as Chairperson of the African Union (2007–2008) during which he supervised the peaceful resolution of the electoral conflict in Kenya in 2008, among others. He was also Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for two terms (2003–2005) and saw to the successful negotiations that brought peace and major post-war reconstruction to Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast and Liberia.
Earlier in his career, he was twice elected as Member of Parliament (1969–1972) and (1979–1981). He served as a Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs (1969-1972), and represented Ghana’s delegation to the United Nations (UN) in 1970; Secretary for Local Government, and Chief Legal Officer and City Manager of Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana.
Under his presidency, Ghana witnessed the fastest growth in its history; attaining a lower Middle-Income status by 2006 much earlier than the projected year of 2015 as envisaged under her own development agenda and GDP growth reached a record of 8.4% between 2007 and 2008, even in the midst of the international financial and economic crises.
He introduced a Health Insurance Scheme, with free maternal care for pregnant women, under which about 56% of the population was registered in its early years and also instituted the Free School Feeding programme to provide one nutritious meal a day for school children from kindergarten (age four), to Junior High School (age 16).
Under President Kufuor, the Ghana’s Agricultural Extension Services programme was reactivated and special attention paid to educating cocoa farmers on best practices. As a result, between 2002 and 2005, cocoa production in Ghana, the world’s second largest producer, doubled from 350,000 tonnes to 734,000 tonnes a year, an all-time record in more than a century of cocoa production in the country. Using similar measures, production of food crops, livestock and fish increased tremendously and poverty levels in Ghana were cut in half early in his administration.
Under his watch, Ghana experienced a very robust infrastructural development in the areas of roads, schools and hospitals, among others.
In retirement, President Kufuor has set up the John A Kufuor Foundation on Leadership, Governance and Development. In 2011 he was named joint-winner of the World Food Prize for Food and Agriculture with former Brazilian President Lula da Silva.
He is currently a Global Ambassador against Hunger for the UN World Food Programme, Chairman of the UN Interpeace Program, Chairman of the Sanitation and Water for All Partnership, Global Envoy for the Neglected Tropical Diseases Alliance, and Lead Advocate for the Partnership for Child Development.
Other positions President Kufuor holds include: President of the Italian Development Organisation, Alliance for Africa, member of Club de Madrid; Director of Brenthurst Foundation of South Africa, Director of the Leon Sullivan Foundation, Director of the Netherlands Development Corporation, and a member of the Global Citizenship Commission tasked with updating the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
President Kufuor was one of 10 distinguished global leaders tasked to work on the reform of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund.
He has served as a leader of several election monitoring delegations to several African countries under the auspices of the African Union and ECOWAS.
President Kufuor has received numerous awards including, the Chatham House prize for Good Leadership by Queen Elizabeth II of Britain, Germany's highest national award - the Bundesverskkreuz by former President Horst Kohler, Liberia's highest award of the Grand Cordon in the Most Venerable Order of the Knighthood of the Pioneers for helping to return peace to that country.
He has received several honorary doctoral degrees from universities in Britain, Nigeria, Ghana and South Korea.
The new University was inaugurated by His Excellency President Kufuor on 18th August, 2005 and he is now appointed as the first Chancellor.
