The 15th Matriculation Ceremony of the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa has been held to formally welcome newly admitted first year students into the University. The Vice Chancellor, Prof J. S. Y. Kuma in his address said that the university received large numbers of applications for admission this year, however many qualified applicants could not be admitted due to the limited facilities in the University. This year, a total of 3,005 candidates applied and only 681 of them got admitted into UMaT. In the area of postgraduate studies, the University admitted a total of 197 postgraduate students to pursue various programmes leading to the award of MSc, Mphil and PhD degrees. This year, a total of 22 international students from countries such as Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Cameroon, Rwanda and Guinea also gained admission to pursue different programmes in the University.

According to Prof Kuma the most significant thing about the enrolment of students this year was that the female numbers had increased from 140 last year to 218 representing 32% of the total admitted which is the highest in the history of the University. He further indicated that “we are not going to rest until our vision of increasing the percentage of women studying engineering in our University to 50% is achieved”.

Prof Kuma congratulated the matriculants for having been among the few lucky ones to have been given a chance over others to study in UMaT. He encouraged them to contribute their part for the enhancement of the image of the University wherever they found themselves. “You should also ensure that you do not do anything that will bring the name of the University into disrepute” he emphasised.

Prof Kuma reminded the matriculants that one of the hallmarks of the University was the institutionalisation of an Innovation and Career Fair which had become one of the flagship programmes where time, energy and other resources were devoted to preparing the students for the ever-changing world of work. He emphasised that the fair also showcased the brilliant ideas the students developed throughout their stay in UMaT to make the world a better place and more sustainable by providing a platform for them to transform what they studied into feasible and scalable projects. He assured the matriculants that UMaT is currently the best place to receive an engineering degree with the requisite practical skills and that UMaT was a well known brand that was committed to ensuring that academic and research activities were taken to a higher level to achieve quality.

Present at the ceremony were Hon Gilbert Ken Asmah, the Municipal Chief Executive of Tarkwa Municipal Assembly, the Presiding Judge of the Tarkwa High Court, His Lordship Justice Ekow Mensah, Some Chiefs from Nkanponase, Headmasters of three Senior High Schools with the highest number of students enrolled in UMaT including Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS), Prempeh College and Tarkwa Senior High School and some Headmasters from Senior High Schools in the University’s catchment area.
