The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) held its 17th Matriculation on 19th February, 2022 to formally welcome fresh students for the 2021/2022 academic year. The ceremony, which was held virtually for both Tarkwa and Esikado campuses, took place at the University’s Smart Classroom.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof Richard K. Amankwah in his address welcomed the fresh students and stated that the University admitted 2,393 to pursue various undergraduate engineering programmes for the 2021/2022 academic year with 21% being females. Also, 106 students were admitted to undertake postgraduate programmes. International students admitted for the year were 37. He therefore congratulated them for their admission.

Prof Amankwah also said that the University admitted its first batch of Diploma students to pursue top-up programmes in Electrical and Electronic and Mechanical Engineering. The University was also selected by the Ministry of Education to pilot the novel Engineering Scholarship programme for the Needy and 50 students were identified from different communities for the 2021/2022 academic year. This scholarship will be sponsored by the Bulk Oil Storage and Transport Company Limited (BOST). He further stated that UMaT has been selected by the Ministry of Education to pioneer a Non-Science to Engineering Programme.

According to the Vice Chancellor the combination of face-to-face and virtual interaction as mode of communication and teaching is an effective way to delimit the spread of COVID-19 and therefore advised students to follow all COVID-19 protocols and charged the students to develop innovative ways of solving problems of the society with the knowledge they will acquire through their studies and research.

Prof Amankwah later appealed to Government and UTAG to work together to reach an amicable solution so that academic work would resume.

The Matriculation Oath was administered by M. K. Okrah, the Registrar.
