Samuel Naamgwimaa, a first-year student pursuing a Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Mines and Technology emerged as the winner during the grand finale of the 5th Presidential Pitch held on Friday, 23rd August 2024 at Movenpick Hotel in Accra. under the auspices of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP). His victory was secured by his innovative project, the ‘Smart Switch System’ which captivated the judges with its potential to transform energy management.
The ‘Smart Switch System’ is an automated energy management system designed to automatically control energy consumption while allowing users to execute tasks remotely and features a security-controlled communication system, ensuring safe and efficient operation. This versatile device can be applied in various environments, including residential spaces, streetlights, vehicles, air conditioning systems, amongst others.
Samuel Naamgwimaa, who triumphed over nine other contestants, has been named the first winner of the Dr. John Kumah Prize for Innovation and Entrepreneurship introduced by President Nana Akufo-Addo which includes a cash prize of GH₵200,000.00. He also received an additional GH₵50,000.00 donation from the President.
In his address, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo highlighted the crucial role of young entrepreneurs in driving economic growth and underscored the need to support their ventures to promote job creation and innovation. He reaffirmed the Government’s dedication to promoting a business-friendly environment, citing the various initiatives and policies implemented over the years to assist startups and small businesses in Ghana.
The Presidential Pitch, which forms part of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme, is a pivotal government initiative aimed at bolstering Ghana's entrepreneurial ecosystem. The programme is designed to transform local businesses and innovative ideas into global ventures, with financial support by the Government for improved livelihood.
