The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), Tarkwa, has participated in the official launch of the Erasmus+ project, UNIHUBS: Fostering Innovation in African HEIs to Enhance Their Relevance for the Digital Innovation Labour Market. This Capacity Building in Higher Education initiative funded by a €799,944 grant from the European Commission was coordinated by the Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University, with partners across Europe and Africa: Greece (University of Macedonia & Stimmuli for Social Change); Ghana (Hapa Foundation, Kumasi Technical University, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and UMaT); Kenya (Kibabii University & University of Nairobi); and Tanzania (University of Iringa, Mbeya University of Science & Technology, & Tanzania Commission for Science & Technology).
The UNIHUBS project aims to connect African universities with digital innovation ecosystems, enhancing their capacity to adopt progressive educational approaches that address current labour market demands, especially within the digital innovation sector. This alignment is expected to improve graduate employability and equip institutions to respond proactively to workforce challenges.
The project’s implementation is grounded in comprehensive research, combining quantitative and qualitative methods to assess and address digital labour market needs and the innovation landscape within universities. Key project interventions include training workshops, collaborative development of educational resources, experiential learning opportunities, and an international online course.
Representing the University at the project’s kick-off event, hosted at the Rotterdam School of Management from October 28–30, 2024, were Professor Michael Affam, Dean of the Office of Research, Innovation, and Consultancy (ORIC), and Mr Eric A. V. Kavaarpuo, Manager of the UNIHUBS Project at UMaT.
