UMaT Partners Mining Tools Ghana to Revolutionise TSF Management with ‘Filter Press Plant’ Technology

The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has partnered with Mining Tools Ghana (Pty) Limited through a Memorandum of Understanding to test and optimise a ‘Filter Press Plant’, an innovative equipment designed for Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) management.

The Filter Press Plant, introduced by the Mining Tools Ghana aims to enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of managing tailings of both small- and large-scale mining operations. The technology is designed to separate solid waste from liquid waste in the extraction process, ensuring optimum gold retrieval while promoting recycling and sustainability of tailings waste materials.

The Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah lauded the initiative and reaffirmed the University’s readiness to collaborate with industry players.  He explained that Mining Tools Ghana, sought the University’s expertise in optimising the technology by identifying operational challenges and developing solutions for its commercial visibility. This, he noted, will provide future buyers with research-backed operational guidelines.

To facilitate the project’s success, Professor Amankwah noted that two engineering master’s students have been assigned to work on the optimisation and refinement of the equipment over a one-year period. “Their research and practical insights will be instrumental in enhancing the plant’s functionality”, he added.

The Business Development Manager of Mining Tools Ghana, Mr Ebenezer Teye underscored that the partnership aligns with the company’s commitment to bridging the gap between academia and industry. He noted that the MoU hopes to generate solid and verifiable data on the equipment’s performance while supporting research at the University. He added that this partnership will enable the company to explore additional value-added uses for both liquid and solid by-products of the filtration process enhancing sustainability and operational efficiency.
