Vice Chancellor Awards Bursary to Ms. Geek 2024 Winner
Ms. Biana Bubune Bottozah, a standout third-year Electrical and Electronic Engineering undergraduate student of the University, received recognition from the University’s Management on Monday, 19th August 2024 following her win in the 2024 Ms. Geek Ghana Competition organised by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation.
During a formal presentation of her award, the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah expressed deep satisfaction with Ms. Bottozah’s achievement, noting that she has brought significant recognition to the University. In honour of her accomplishment, Professor Amankwah granted her a bursary to cover her tuition fees for the remainder of her undergraduate studies.
Ms. Bottozah clinched the top spot with her groundbreaking presentation of a mobile app designed to combat illegal mining activities and its environmental impact in Ghana. The app utilises the Internet of Things (IoT)-connected seismic sensors and data analytics to monitor illegal mining activities even in remote areas. The sensors track the activities and communicate through the mobile application in real-time for response and ensure real-time data transmission while addressing the issue of limited internet connectivity in remote areas.
Ms Geek Ghana Competition was launched by the Ministry of Communications and Digitalisation in 2019 to empower young women in ICT, align with SDG 5 on gender equality, and showcase the contributions of women in the tech industry. The 2024 edition of the competition drew 66 applications from girls between the ages of 13 and 21, with the top 10 projects spanning from e-waste management solutions to healthcare innovations being selected for the finals.
Following her victory, Mrs. Bottozah will represent Ghana at the 2025 Ms. Geek Africa Edition, where she will present her groundbreaking innovation on an international platform and spotlight the potential of Ghanaian women in the tech industry.
The University Community congratulates Ms Biana Bubune Bottozah for her incredible achievement.
