SALE OF APPLICATION FORMS FOR ADMISSION
It is announced for the information of prospective applicants that application forms for admission to programmes in the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa for the 2010/2011 academic year are on sale.
The cost of one application form for admission (to be purchased by cash) is Fifty Ghana Cedis (GH¢50.00) or Fifty US dollars (US$50.00). A brochure of guidelines and admission requirements for the various programmes and prepaid EMS envelopes are inclusive.
Applicants are allowed to purchase and submit only one form. Those who submit more than one completed application form for admission shall be disqualified.
The application forms for admission can be purchased at the following places:

Applicants with ‘O’ and ‘A’ Level Certificates
Applicants must have GCE Ordinary Level Certificate or its equivalent with credits in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and GCE Advanced Level Certificate with passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
Mature Applicants
Applicants should be at least 25 years of age and should have SSS or GCE O’ Level Certificate with passes five subjects including English Language and Mathematics and a Science subject plus experience in the relevant area of study.
Foreign Applicants
Applicants with equivalent qualifications will be considered for admission.
Specially Sponsored or Fee-paying Applicants
Applicants who satisfy UMaT’s minimum entry requirement of aggregate 36 but cannot meet the competitive departmental cut-off aggregate can apply for admission provided they have sponsorship to cover their full fees of GH¢4,126.00 per year throughout their study at UMaT. Such applicants must attach a letter of sponsorship from a registered company or organisation to the completed application form for admission.
GRADE AGGREGATE SYSTEM
UMaT uses the new grading system of WASSCE for the selection of candidates and in this system, grade aggregate of 36 is the minimum entry requirement at UMaT. The following table shows this new grading system and the SSSCE equivalent grades.

ADMISSIONS TO CERTIFICATE PROGRAMME IN GENERAL DRILLING
Applications are invited from qualified candidates into a one year non residential certificate programme in General Drilling run by the Geological Engineering Department of the University.
Candidates must possess any of the following:
- WASS/SSS Certificate with passes in English Language, Core Science and Mathematics, plus any other two (2) elective subjects (preferably science electives);
- General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level with passes in five (5) subjects including English Language, Mathematics and a science subject; or
- City and Guilds of London Institute Part II Certificate in Mechanical, Automobile, or Electrical Engineering.
FEE: The fee for the General Drilling Programme is Five Hundred and Fifty Ghana Cedis (Gh¢550.00). Residential Facility User Fee (for those who may secure university residence) and other student fees are not included in this fee.
CLOSING DATE:
Completed application forms with relevant supporting documents must be returned to the Registrar, UMaT, Tarkwa, not later than April 20, 2010.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
A. MSc and MPhil Programmes:
At the time of application, candidates for the MSc and MPhil Programmes must:
- Hold either a BSc or its equivalent in Geomatic Eng., Geological Eng., Mining Eng. and Mineral Eng. or related Engineering or Science Programme from a recognised University or
- Be holders of Diploma in Geomatic Engineering, Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering and Mineral Engineering or related engineering disciplines from UMaT who are in senior management positions in an appropriate industry and must have had a minimum of 5 years professional experience with proven ability in their discipline.
B. PhD Programmes:
Candidates for the PhD Programmes should hold MSc or MPhil degree or their equivalents in Mining Engineering or Geological Engineering or related Engineering Programme from a recognised University. Candidates applying for the MPhil and PhD Programmes must submit an outline of the proposed research.
DURATION OF PROGRAMMES
MSc and MPhil Programmes:
Full-time: A maximum of two (2) academic years
Part-time: A maximum of three (3) academic years
PhD Programmes:
Full-time: A maximum of three (3) academic years
Part-time: A maximum of four (4) academic years
