Newmont Ghana Donates $500,000 to UMaT


Newmont Ghana Gold Limited has donated $500,000 to the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa (UMaT) towards the acquisition and installation of fire suppression and security surveillance systems at the University.

The donation formed part of a Memorandum of Understanding signed between Newmont and UMaT to collaborate on wider issues and promote mutual interest within the sphere of education for students and the Ghanaian mining industry.

Professor Daniel Mireku-Gyimah, Vice Chancellor who signed on behalf of the University said UMaT was committed to judiciously using the donation by Newmont Ghana Gold Limited for the intended purpose.

“We are happy about this collaboration with Newmont Ghana Gold Limited. The $500,000 donation will go a long way to protect the critical infrastructure and equipment of the University”, Professor Mireku-Gyimah said.

Initialing for Nemont Ghana Gold Limited, Mr. Jeff Huspeni, Senior Regional Vice President-African Operations said the donation formed part of the company’s greater commitment to Ghana. He stated that Newmont Ghana was committed to strengthening educational systems and building capacity in the local workforce, host communities, broader knowledge sharing and supporting education locally, regionally and nationally.

Mr. Huspeni added that education was a cornerstone to long-term and sustainable economic development and described mining as a key contributor to Ghana’s future growth and revealed that since Newmont began operating in Ghana in 2006, the company had committed over US$20 million to a variety of educational causes in the country.

He disclosed that Newmont Ghana has expended over $12 million dollars in vocational and technical skills training and about US$500,000 to development of educational infrastructure within its host communities and hoped for a mutually beneficial collaboration UMaT and Newmont.
