ORGANISED LABOUR HONOURS UMaT STAFF

Miss Augustina Abaidoo, a Senior Administrative Assistant of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) has been honoured as the Best Union Activists by the organized labour at the just ended 2010 National May Day celebration in Accra.

The May Day Celebrations which falls on May 1, every year and celebrated across the globe is used to honour workers for their contributions towards national development was attended by the President, His Excellency Prof J.E. A. Mills, the Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Mr. E. T. Mensah, members of the diplomatic corp, members of parliament, ministers of state and a cross section of workers

For her prize, Miss Abaidoo received a medium size deep freezer valued at about One Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢ 1000) and a citation for her commitment and dedication to the cause of the ordinary Ghanaian worker over the past twenty seven (27) years as an employee of University of Mines and Technology, formerly Tarkwa School of Mine.

The citation recognised Miss Abaidoo’s energy, fighting spirit and her greater desire for fair play which had moved her closer to the Union, and that her leadership qualities catapulted her the through the leadership ranks in the Union and labour movement in rapid sequence.

The citation indicated that Miss Abaidoo, since joining the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) in 1982 as an employee of the then UST School of Mines, Tarkwa, had continued to render dedicated services to the Union at the local and national levels.

As a first national trustee of Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) since 2003, the citation further described her as a source of inspiration to most female union activists in the labour movement.
